Nigeria to host African zonal W’lifting tourney
Nigeria is to host the African Zone One Weightlifting Championships in April 2009, Babatunde Adedimeji, First Vice President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), said Friday.
Adedimeji said 16 African countries including Nigeria, Egypt, Libya, Sudan, Chad, Eritrea, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia and Central Africa Republic are in Zone One.
Others are, Congo, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Sao-Tome and Principe and Congo Democratic Republic.
He told newsmen in Lagos today that “all the countries in the zone are expected to attend the championship in Abuja in April.’’
He said it was the first time Nigeria was awarded the hosting right of a major weightlifting competition, adding that the NWF was excited at the award.
“It is regrettable that in spite of the achievements recorded in weightlifting at the continental and world levels, Nigeria had never hosted any major international competition,” Adedimeji said.
He said the federation would embark on an aggressive sponsorship drive to raise funds for the hosting.
He stated that the federation would engage a credible marketing organisation to handle the sponsorship drive.
