Australian researchers helping improve African agriculture
Australian agricultural scientists are helping the small African nation of Eritrea become self-sufficient in food production.
Since 2005, the Department of Primary Industries' Agricultural Institute at Wagga Wagga has been working with the Eritreans to improve stock feed over their long dry season.
Eritrea's Minister for Agriculture, Arefaine Berhe, says he hopes Australian experts can teach Eritrean farmers modern methods, increase productivity and grow enough food to feed the country.
"Eritrea is a young nation, we are only 17 years old, so you can imagine a young nation with young institutions with very traditional agriculture," he says.
"So that is why we want to learn from the vast experience of Australian agriculture.
"We are working hard to achieve food security."
